Jackrabbits/Track Attack

Welcome to the 2009/2010 Lappe Jackrabbit ski season!

2009/2010 Jackrabbit schedule

For those who are new to the Jackrabbit Ski League, welcome to Lappe!  For returning parents and participants, great to see you back and thank you for your continued involvement!  The program at Lappe is part of the Cross Country Canada Jackrabbit Ski League. As a Jackrabbit, your child is a member of the largest cross country ski association in North America.  The Jackrabbit Ski League is dedicated to encouraging young people to enjoy the sport of cross-country skiing.

The Jackrabbit program focuses on X-country skill development through fun activities and games that are appropriate to each age and skill level. Jackrabbit Leaders are volunteers, most are parents of children in the program.   A number of leaders have coaching certification and have been with us for many years.  We always welcome parents, regardless of their skill level, to become involved in the program.

We are going into our 5th season of using the revised Jackrabbit Program. This program not only recognizes achievements such as skill level completion, Speed, Distance and ‘Hat Trick’ Awards but also emphasizes ski outings between Jackrabbit sessions for which a ‘Snow Goal’ is awarded. These are recognized in individual Jackrabbit Handbooks.

BUNNY RABBITS
Bunny Rabbits are the very young skiers, under 6 years of age.  There is a strong emphasis on games at this level. A parent must accompany and participate in sessions along with their child.

MAIN PROGRAM: 6-10 years
The main Jackrabbit program covers skill development for children between the ages of 6 to10.  Four major skills sets are introduced...Basic skills, Classical skills, Skating skills and Downhill skills. Emphasis is placed on using fun and games as a tool to introduce these skills. Overall enjoyment of the sport is our goal.

Track Attack: 10-14 years
As Jackrabbits reach adolescents, the Track Attack program is offered.  The Program provides veteran Jackrabbits with an opportunity to further develop their cross country skiing abilities beyond the 5 Levels in the regular Jackrabbits program. The Track Attack program uses games and participation to further develop solid cross country skiing skills. The Track Attack program can also help those with a competitive spirit that may want to experiment with intermediate competition. The program can help to bridge the gap between Jackrabbits and Junior Racing and Development.

SCHEDULE
Sessions will begin with getting-to-know you activities, games, orienteering and dry land training as we wait for the snow to arrive.  A full schedule will be issued at the first session.
Sessions are Saturdays 11:00am-1:00pm
Cancellation: if temperature is below -20 C

EQUIPMENT
Classic style ski equipment is essential in all skill levels. You will need to supply your child with this equipment. Skate ski technique is introduced at Level 4.  Lappe Jackrabbits has several pairs of skate skis, poles and boots available for use during the sessions. Please return all borrowed equipment to the cupboard. Ski swaps are a good place to search out bargains for growing Jackrabbits. Lappe Nordic Ski Swap date will be announced. Watch the Lappe Bulletin Boards as well. Also several used equipment shops in town offer economical options for outfitting Jackrabbits.  New or used, it is best to choose equipment that is the right size for your Jackrabbit.

FEE STRUCTURE
Jackrabbit registration fees are used to deliver the Cross Country Canada Jackrabbit Program. The registration fee is $30.00 for one child, $55.00 for two children and $10.00 for each additional child in a family plus an $9.00 LSSD/CCO/CCC insurance fee per Jackrabbit.

A Lappe Nordic Ski Centre trail pass is also needed.  There are different trail pass options for Jackrabbits. There is a Jackrabbit trail pass which is only valid during organized Jackrabbit sessions and events ($65 per child). Other trail pass options include a Junior Lappe Nordic Ski Centre trail pass or a Family trail pass, which permit the use of the Lappe Nordic Ski Centre trails and facilities at all times during the entire ski season.  Trail passes must be worn during sessions. A complete fee schedule is available from the Lappe Nordic Ski Centre/Club (see the
Fees & Registration link).

WHAT TO WEAR
Until snow is with us be prepared for hiking and playing on wet, muddy ground. When skiing begins, dress in layers to allow body temperature control during activities. An outer wind layer is essential. Be prepared for each session with a hat, neck warmer, extra socks and mitts.

SNACK /BREAK
Midway through the session, a 15 minute break is planned for a drink, snack and warm-up.  To keep the break short, please save your lunch until after the session.

VOLUNTEERS
Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate by volunteering with the program. Leaders and Assistant Leaders commit themselves to the Saturday sessions.  New leaders often “assist” in their first season to gain experience and confidence in relaying their knowledge and joy of cross-country skiing to our Jackrabbits.  Training and skill development sessions will be held for Leaders. You can also volunteer for Special Events like time trials, bonfires or the Christmas party.  Please let us know when you are available!

SPENDING YOUR DAY AT LAPPE
Once the Jackrabbit session is over don’t run off, stay for a plate of delicious Finn pancakes. The Lappe kitchen offers a full lunch menu. Stay to practice those new ski techniques or just go skiing. Bring your toboggan! Lappe Nordic Ski Centre is fortunate to offer a fun and safe tobogganing hill that is visible from the chalet and the 4.6km trail. After you’ve had enough of the great outdoors, come in and warm-up in the beautiful saunas. What a perfect winter day!
